Program: Preservation of Historical Corinth Church
The Powhatan County Historical Society is currently acting as the conduit organization for securing volunteers and donations for the preservation of this landmark church and cemetery.
Origins of Corinth Church:
Robert Wren, Sr., owned the land on which the original church was built. He deeded this land, for $1 (one dollar), to the trustees of the church in 1844.
The first church actually stood across the road from the present structure. In 1851, Thomas Saunders sold to the trustees for $60 the land upon which the present church stands.
Robert Wren was the first pastor of the church which was founded as a Christian Church, also known as the Church of the Disciples of Christ. This was the only church of that affiliation in Powhatan County and over the years the church has served other denominations.
The quaint county church has been featured in film and television movies.
Vacant now for several years, the revival of interest in the preservation of the church was initiated by concerned neighbors and relatives of those buried in the cemetery. The Powhatan County Historical Society already owns and preserves historic Grace Church on Rocky Ford road but has offered to guide this worthy project.
The above information was largely obtained from a WPA file on the church compiled during the great depression by Elizabeth Rust. She noted the “Historical Significance: Mr. Robert Wren, Sr., was the first Pastor. Some of the trustees were prominent in their community, such as: Mr. Wilson Winfree, (an attorney), miller and large land owner and farmer. Also such prominent names as Sublett, Harris and Porter, appear on the modest slate slabs and granite tombstones in the small cemetery in the church yard.”
