Elwood Floyd Yates

        Elwood Floyd Yates, 107, of Powhatan, died surrounded by his family on August 31, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Charles and Elia Avery Yates; and his wife of 69 years, Mary Bowles Yates. Floyd was the last surviving member of a family of nine of Charles City County.

        He was the world's oldest active member of the Lions Club International and the longest serving Masonic Mason in Virginia. Floyd retired as a Ford-Mercury dealer after 54 years.

        He represented Powhatan and Chesterfield counties as a delegate in the Virginia General Assembly from 1940 to 1951.

        He is survived by his son, Elwood Floyd Yates Jr. and wife Vickie; four grandchildren, Kathy "Muffy" Yates Vestal and husband, Marty; Elwood F. Yates III and wife, Brandi; William M. Yates, Ashley G. Fitch and husband, Christopher; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

        The family wishes to thank Shirley Wade and Sherri McKenna for their loving devotion in caring for Floyd and especially to the 5 O'Clock Boys, who added much joy and years to his life.

        The family received friends Thursday at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home.

        Funeral services were held Friday in the Powhatan United Methodist Church.
