Powhatan Community Cemetery

        C. Mason Fariss, a retired Powhatan County revenue commissioner, died yesterday after a long illness. He was 61 and lived in Powhatan.

Mr. Fariss attended local schools and was a graduate of Powhatan County High School.

After high school, Mr. Fariss worked as a bookkeeper for Simpson Motor Co. and held the part-time position of clerk of the county court.

He was first elected revenue commissioner in 1956. He held the position until he retired because of poor health in 1979.

"He was a very popular officeholder," said William E. Maxey Jr., clerk of the Circuit Court. "He was close to the people and willing to do anything he could to help people, even above and beyond his job."

Mr. Fariss was a member of May Memorial Baptist Church and was a Mason.

He is survived by two brothers, William M. Fariss Jr. and Edward R. Fariss, both of Richmond.

A funeral will be held at Rose Funeral Home in Powhatan at 3 p.m. tomorrow. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Powhatan Rescue Squad.
