        Garland Kenneth Stokes, 79, widower of Alberta Stokes, died at his home in Powhatan, August 7, 2009. He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons, Garland K. Stokes Jr. (Karon), Dennis Wayne Stokes (Terry), Jeffery Dale Stokes, all of Powhatan; one daughter, Kathy Willis (Don) of South Carolina; two brothers, Stuart Stokes of Richmond, Sidney Stokes; sister, Ruth Boatwright, both of Powhatan; 10 grandchildren, Donald Willis, Paul Willis, Jake Stokes, Lisa Richter, Allison Stokes, Hank Stokes, Kendall Stokes, Garland Stokes III, Jennifer Villanurda, Jeffery Stokes Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

        Mr. Stokes served in the US Navy for 22 years and upon retirement returned to Powhatan where he served as Sheriff for four years and then worked for the Department of Corrections.

        The family received friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt 60), Powhatan.

        Funeral services were held Monday in the Muddy Creek Baptist Church. Interment church cemetery.
