John Tyler Harris

        John Tyler Harris, son of the late Lee T. and Minnie Harris, was born December 3, 1911 in Powhatan County, Virginia. He departed this life peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at home with his family.

        John T. (Johnny) was owner and founder of Harris' Gas and Grocery in Powhatan, Virginia in 1941. He also worked at Bellwood General Defense, Richmond, Virginia for a few years but preferred working for himself. John T., his brothers Lawson and Warren and a cousin, Leroy, formed Font Hill Partnership Club, a sawmill and logging company which is now known as the Virginia State Game Reserve (800 acres).

        He was married for 61 years to the late Alberta Hobson Harris.

        He leaves to mourn one daughter - Evelyn H. Woolridge, one son - John Otis Harris, Sr., two grandsons - DeMarco A. Harris and John Otis Harris, Jr., one daughter-in-law - Carolyn M. Harris, one granddaughter-in-law - Betty M. Harris, two great-grandchildren - Blair and Tyler Harris, four brothers - Lawson, Robert, Warren and Calvin Harris, six sisters - Ethel Delaney, Alma Morris, Minnie Clark, Ester Whither, Blanche Jones, and Eunice Stout, six sister-in-laws, one brother-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Loving hands tried to save you
Prayers and tears were all in vain  
Happy angels came and took you
From this world of toil and pain.
