James (Leroy) Hargrave, a son of the late James (Jim) Hargrave and Maggie Scruggs Hargrave was born on March 27, 1921 in Henrico County, Virginia.
At an early age he was converted, baptized and joined Hollywood Baptist Church where he served on the deacon’s ministry for many years.
Leroy attended Powhatan County Public Schools. After school he enlisted in the United States Army on March 24, 1943 and was honorably discharged on December 22, 1945.
On April 16, 1946 he was joined in wedlock to Miss Mahala Lucy Brown. From this union five children were born; a daughter, Maydawn preceded him in death.
Leroy was employed with Cary Street Shopping Center as a parking lot attendant from which he retired.
For about a year he has been in declining health and departed this life on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the McGuire Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia.
Rejoicing in his homegoing, yet mourning in his loss, he leaves: his wife of 56 years, Mahala Hargrave; five loving children, Iolet White, James (Donnie) Hargrave, Yvette Decker, Leavonia (Vonnie) Hargrave and Geraldine Purnell; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, David Fisher, Sr.; two daughters-in-law, Veronica Hargrave and Cynthia M. Bowman; two sons-in-law, Donald White and Oliver Purnell; a brother-in-law, Luther Brown; six sisters-in-law, Vivian Burgess, Louise Williams, Shirley Brown, Earlene Wilson, Kate Brown and Alice Fisher; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
There is no death in heaven,
For those who gain that shore;
They have received immortality,
And they can die no more.
Servant of God well done!
Rest from Thy loved employ;
The battle fought, the victory won,
Enter Thy master’s joy.
